This here is the second of three pieces I'm doing on Sun Woo Kong, The Monkey King, in present'ish day New York City Chinatown. This particular illustration happens to be on Doyers Street...which is one of the most famous streets in Chinatown.
The violence that would eventually transform Doyers Street into “Bloody Angle” began as early as the 1880s. But according to New York Magazine: “the most bloody tong war in Chinatown history” began in 1909, when the Hip Sings killed an On Leong for “being disrespectful.”
I took a more fun and light hearted approach to this historic street, choosing to show the hustle and bustle of Chinatown. The hardest part of this to illustrate was doing the chinese typography on all the signs. It stressed me out trying to get them correctly.
The pencils to this piece alone took me a solid.....25 hours I'd say. The colors took another 10 hours.
All in all though, I'm pretty pleased with how this piece came out. Looking forward to finishing the 3rd and final piece for this series.
