Asian Heritage Month!
May 1, 2017
So the month of May is Asian Heritage Month. And I thought with all the white washing going on in Hollywood with Asian people...that it would be a good time to do something. ANYthing.
Really the only thing I can offer is my point of view on things. Many many moons ago, I'm thinking about 10-13 years ago, I was on a panel at MOCA and we had discussed Asian representation in pop culture. There I had talked about how as a child I always just kind of pretended Ironfist and Snake Eyes were actually Chinese.
And while I was there, I had done a drawing of Ironfist as an Asian American. Unfortunately I don't have a picture or scan of that drawing as I gave it away to someone in attendance at the panel.
So I drew another one.
I know everyone is probably sick and tired about discussing Ironfist...and the netflix show has already proved how crappy it is.
But I had to give my take on it again anyway. Instead of making Danny Rand(Ironfist) a rich white guy, how about making him Asian American? One that doesn't know how to speak any Asian language. And he's from the streets and isn't rich, but poor?
So he goes on the trip to K'un L'un to not only find out about his culture and heritage, but to also learn discipline and how to focus his energies?
I just honestly think this would be so much more interesting.
And instead of that silly clip art dragon tattoo he has on his chest, how about going with a giant body dragon tattoo? And instead of wearing a silly mask, how about going with some face paint? As if he's ready to go to war?
Just some thoughts of mine on how a reboot of Ironfist could and should go. My version of the character would have him growing up in the streets of Chinatown...as a poor, tough kid with a hard way of life.
So for each week of May, I'll be doing one or two drawings a week of some sort of point of conversation for Asian American heroes and Asian American representation. I've even gone ahead and asked some of my friends to join me, and we're going to hashtag #asianheroesmonth.
So hopefully some of them actually will join me this month. haha
And hope you can dig what we're trying to do. Which is just bring some awareness and a different direction on how some of these characters could and ideally should have been done.
And PLEASE feel free to join in and use the hashtag #asianheroesmonth!
